In The Moment: Japanese Art From The Larry Ellison Collection, San Francisco Asian Art Museum

Sound Design & Audio Installation

Changing light and sound was used in a special viewing room to simulate time passing through the four seasons, lending new context to viewing of this incredible artwork.

Two stereo digital audio repeaters were linked to create an affordable quadraphonic program. Four corner speakers were hidden behind side screens which helped diffuse the sound field while maintaining a decent amount of directionality.

All sounds used were gathered in Japan for the album Natural Sounds of Japan.

A California State Landmark and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, Filoli wanted to add immersive sound to several rooms in order to help tell the story of the house through the decades.

The kitchen was brought alive with bustling sounds and swing music coming from a vintage 1940s radio. The study represented a period in the 1960s with Ozzie and Harriet on the television and the home’s owners in various parts of the room playing bridge and making drinks. Most complex was the dining room where over a dozen guests, each coming out of individual speakers took visitors back to New Year’s Eve 1933 and the end of Prohibition.
